The neo-gothic Sayn Palace, built in 1848 by the French architect F. J. Girard, later the chief director of the Louvre in Paris, stands at the foot of Sayn Castle. The main attraction in the English-style palace gardens, also created in the mid 19th century, is the butterfly garden. Hundreds of exotic tropical plants and birds can be admired among streams, bridges and grottos.

Safety information

Health and safety
  • Wear suitable weatherproof clothing that will protect you from cold, wet, heat and sunshine.
  • Make sure you take regular breaks and don't overexert yourself.
  • Take enough fluids with you as there are sections without rest stops.
  • Wear suitable hiking boots/shoes which give you enough grip on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven surfaces.
  • Avoid any sections of the route which you feel are too difficult for you. Natural trails can quickly become wet and slippery in adverse weather conditions.
  • Particularly in autumn, you should be careful of uneven ground, roots, stones or holes that have been covered by leaves.
  • You need to take these kinds of adverse conditions into account every time you go on a hike.
  • Particularly steep and dangerous places are made safer with handrails or ropes. Please use these as safety aids. Handrails are not to be climbed on or used to get a better view!

Turn-by-turn directions

From the castle park, we take the Koblenz-Olpe-Straße to the right as far as Berliner Straße. At the end of this street, a winding path ascends through young beech woods to the Friedrichsberg mountain. The trail follows the Rheinhöhenweg trail on a wide forest path, with beautiful views of Sayn Palace, to the viewing point at Bismarckhöhe and on to Neuwieder Zoo. From here, you can see far into the Neuwied river basin. The zoo houses more than 1.500 animals from Europe and further afield in spacious outdoor enclosures. The trail follows the Waldstraße downhill through a tree-lined meadow towards the birdwatching trail on the Kuckucksberg mountain. At the end of the nature trail, the route runs towards Heimbach-Weis downhill to the Schnepfenteich lake and the ‘Haus am Pilz’ restaurant. Here, we cross Dierdorfer Straße and walk towards Oberbieber down into the Aubach Valley and to a regional riding centre. We walk along the edge of the riding centre to get to Schwanenteich lake, before immediately ascending to the Wingertsberg, where we can find traces of the Roman limes (defence walls). A reconstruction of the fortifications and a Roman tower stand nearby. This kind of large stone tower replaced wooden ones in the 2nd century AD. The trail continues through thick pine forests to Rengsdorf, where this stage of the trail ends.

Getting home: take the bus to Neuwied train station, change there for a bus that will take you to the castle park.
