The climactic spa town of Rengsdorf is nestled in the Rhenish Westerwald, the region between the romantic Middle Rhine Valley and the high ridge of the Westerwald mountains. Here, the Rheinsteig trail is at its furthest from the Rhine Valley, but this area, which bypasses the less attractive area around Neuwied's industrial estates and instead passes through high forest, valleys and orchards, is definitely not to be missed.

Author’s recommendation

Safety information

Health and safety
  • Wear suitable weatherproof clothing that will protect you from cold, wet, heat and sunshine.
  • Make sure you take regular breaks and don't overexert yourself.
  • Take enough fluids with you as there are sections without rest stops.
  • Wear suitable hiking boots/shoes which give you enough grip on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven surfaces.
  • Avoid any sections of the route which you feel are too difficult for you. Natural trails can quickly become wet and slippery in adverse weather conditions.
  • Particularly in autumn, you should be careful of uneven ground, roots, stones or holes that have been covered by leaves.
  • You need to take these kinds of adverse conditions into account every time you go on a hike.
  • Particularly steep and dangerous places are made safer with handrails or ropes. Please use these as safety aids. Handrails are not to be climbed on or used to get a better view!

Turn-by-turn directions

This section of the trail begins on the Rengsdorf terrace, where summer visitors started their hikes as early as 1900, and descends to the Völkerwiesenbach Valley. The trail continues across the valley floor and ascends through beech woods on a winding path to the Chapel of St Castor. Turn right here into the apple orchard and walk across a park to the Roman defence ditches. We follow the walls, overgrown with hornbeam trees, until they end at a tennis court and continue from there straight on to the Schauinsland viewing point. The trail then descends steeply into the Laubach Valley to the Almblick viewing point, where you can see a loop of the River Wied. Just after the Almblick, it's worth making a detour to see the 20m high waterfall. The Laubach mill in nearby Wied Valley once served as a powder mill for the mine close by. We continue on the trail towards Altwied. The castle there was the seat of the Counts of Neuwied until 1653. Crossing the River Moorbach and winding its way across open ground, the Rheinsteig trail leads back into the Aubach Valley and then upwards towards Monrepos Castle and down to the River Reichelbach. Passing through a meadow with great views, the trail continues down to the River Buchbach, then to the Kehlbach Valley in the direction of Feldkirchen. More beautiful views await you at the end of this hike, of Andernach on the opposite bank of the Rhine from the Hüllenberger Stolperstein and of the wine-growing town of Leutesdorf from the paths through the vineyards. This stage of the trail then ends in Leutesdorf.
