For the first few kilometres the route runs parallel to the Middle Ages Path Dream Loop. After crossing Hosenbachtal we experience a change from wide views and forest formations. At Sonnschied there are several grandiose views to Hahnenbachtal and the surrounding area before starting the descent into the valley. In the lower part we follow the course of the Steinbach until arriving at the small village of Rudolsfhaus. From there it is still 800 m parallel to Hahnenbach to the destination at the Forellenhof Reinhardtsmühle (Reinhardt’s mill trout farm).

Traces of the Middle Ages

On parts of the Middle Ages path, which is parallel to Herrstein, you follow the traces of the past, e.g. the route of an old Roman road and a historic gallows site. You can learn about this time from the information boards on the Middle Ages path, including about Hildegard von Bingen, who was born nearby.

Herrstein town centre from the Middle Ages

The historic centre of Herrstein retains numerous half-timbered houses from the Middle Ages. The highlights are the castle church, clock tower, Schinderhannes tower and Hankelbrunnen well.

Tours May-Oct Thu 16.30, Sat 14.30 from the clock tower, on request at any time for groups. Torch and Schinderhannes tours.

Equipment

The Saar-Hunsrück Climb is a natural path that for 65% of its route is on soft forest floor, grass paths or alongside streams. But this special quality can result in problems after long periods of rain, making parts of the route difficult to walk. We therefore recommend wearing sturdy shoes.
