Turn-by-turn directions

This route description of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig starts in Trier, the oldest city in Germany. From there the path leads through the Ruwer valley with its vineyards and wine villages up to the Hunsrück to Kell am See. From there, the main route continues via Hermeskeil into the Hunsrück. There the landscape shows itself from its hilly side. So the trail crosses the Dollberge ridge and later with the Erbeskopf (816 meters) the highest point in Rhineland-Palatinate. This section also has a lot to offer in terms of cultural history with the Celtic ring wall near Otzenhausen and the medieval Wildenburg near Kempfeld. Between the ring wall and the Wildenburg, it also crosses the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park on four stages. The section of the route in the eastern Hunsrück between Idar-Oberstein and Boppard also impresses with the combination of spectacular views with forest passages and natural silence with bizarre gorges. Historical places such as the old town of Idar-Oberstein, the medieval Herrstein, the castle town of Kastellaun and the little Rhine town of Boppard are then on the hiking trail.
