The Westerwald-Steig is a trail with magnificent views. It spans 235 kilometres from Herborn to Rheinbrohl over mountains, romantic gorges and alpine climbing courses, alternating between wide paths for relaxing strolls to narrow paths to test your balance on. There is always something interesting to discover along this trail – a quaint river valley, an imposing abbey, prehistoric excavations and limestone caves or a cosy guesthouse – the variety is endless.

Wide paths for relaxation alternate with narrow paths for balancing. Many surprises are waiting at the wayside. Sometimes it is a rustic stream valley, sometimes a stately monastery with an exciting history, prehistoric excavations and stalactite caves or a cosy inn.

Safety information

We will inform you about detours, road closures or other safety instructions on the WesterwaldSteig at the respective stage!

Wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing adapted to the weather, which will protect you from cold and wet or heat and sun.Take sufficient liquid with you. There are not refreshment facilities available everywhere. Please put on appropriate hiking boots, which will give you sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths. If you feel that certain sections of the path are not accessible to you, you should avoid them. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, slushy and slippery passages can occur on near-natural paths.Especially in autumn, you should also be aware that the leaves lying on the ground can cover up unevenness, roots, stones or holes in the path. You must reckon with this kind of path obstruction when you go on a hike.Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons.
