If you want to walk on the paths of pilgrims, you come on the Jakobspilgerweg stage from Mainz to Bingen through the middle of the red wine town of Ingelheim am Rhein. Almost a short journey through time, because the path leads past all the historical buildings in the city. You pass the Carolingian aqueduct, the imperial palace of Charlemagne, the Heidesheimer Tor, the hall church, the museum, the old town hall Nieder-Ingelheim, the Remigius church, where the pilgrim's temple can be purchased, the path of sighs and the picturesque castle church with the Battlements in Ober-Ingelheim. Then the silence of nature in the romantic Selztal beckons before Gau-Algesheim tempts you to stop again with historical flair. Note on the sanctuary tour: A memorial stele on the L419 cycle path between Gau-Algesheim and Sporkenheim reminds of the supply point for Hungarian pilgrims. For centuries there was a pilgrimage station here on the way to Aachen, where - to this day - the four shrines are shown every 7 years in June.

Author’s recommendation

How about a cozy picnic at the table of wine and enjoy the panoramic view? Is a worthwhile detour from the Jakobspilgerweg

Turn-by-turn directions

The Jakobsweg stage begins in Heidesheim / Ingelheim am Rhein. The rather steep ascent to the Mainzer Berg takes place over a wooded path that finally ends in a gravel path. At the top there is a wonderful view of the Rhine Valley and Ingelheim. The path flanks the Mainzer Berg and leads along the vines to Ober-Ingelheim, past the remains of the Carolingian aqueduct to Charlemagne's imperial palace. The Heidesheimer Tor, the hall church, the museum near the Kaiserpfalz and the old town hall Nieder-Ingelheim are also on the route. The pilgrim's stamp can be purchased at the Remigius Church. The path of sighs on the east wall of the castle church is particularly enchanted. The pilgrim path finally leaves Ingelheim and leads below the Bismarck Tower along meadows and fruit trees towards Gau-Algesheim, where the stage ends.
