Glowing lava poured out of the earth's interior. That was once upon a time. What remains and shapes the region around Bad Marienberg is basalt. The Feuerschleife is a circular hike (17.5 km) that is peppered with eloquent evidence of the glowing Westerwald past and presents itself as a varied loop in the most beautiful Westerwald landscape.

Author’s recommendation

A walk on the barefoot path is not to be missed! If the weather is suitable, take off your shoes and socks and walk along the different fields of the barefoot path. An experience for the senses!

Turn-by-turn directions

The basalt park at the start, the basalt rock tumuli of Kleiner and Großer Wolfstein, the basalt outcrop from Scharfenstein, the basalt boulders in the valley of the Nister, the beautiful basalt rock valley of the Schwarze Nister below Bad Marienberg and the passage through Bad Marienberg peppered with many testimonies of basalt mining make the hot history of the region present. Sturdy shoes are recommended, as well as appropriate clothing for the weather, which protects against cold and wet or heat and sun.

Also take enough liquid with you, there are no refreshment stops along the way.
