A hike through the valley of the "Wilden Endert" offers a very original experience of nature. The stream of the same name, on whose banks 34 mills once worked, stands for the wild and romantic side valley of the Moselle.

Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2019The hiking trail leads from Ulmen to Cochem directly along the Endertbach stream and is an insider's tip for anyone who wants to see unspoilt nature, narrow trails, wooden bridges, lots of forest, naturally winding streams and old mills. Some of these are now privately owned.  The Goebelsmühle, which lies on the route, invites you to linger. The wild and romantic Endert valley is one of the most impressive side valleys of the Moselle. The Endertbach changes from a tranquil trickle to a real torrent, especially after heavy rainfall. It makes its way through a rugged valley incision with impressive flora and fauna until it pours into the Moselle in Cochem.

Author’s recommendation

A tour of the romantic Moselle town of Cochem with its half-timbered houses and a visit to Reichsburg Castle are cultural highlights of this tour. We end a varied day with a glass of Moselle wine.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hiking trail begins at the Crusader castle in Ulmen. Via the Ulmen Martberg and the Karolinerweg to the Maria Martental monastery. Passing the church, we are soon, downhill with the Sesterbach, at its mouth in the Endertbach. A footbridge leads over this brook, which falls about 7m here in a waterfall called "Die Rausch"; it is a remarkable natural monument. The hiking route is now marked with a black arrowhead, which we first hike towards on a wide forest path. This takes us to the "Napoleon Bridge" over which the old Koblenz-Trier post road led. We leave the road after about 200m on a path that branches off to the left towards the stream. The part of the valley called "Wilde Endert" begins. Our hike now goes up and down rocky paths, past gorge-like slate rocks and several times on footbridges over the stream, where the former mills Maxmehrmühle, Browelsmühle, Bücheler Mühle, Goeblesmühle, Ostersmühle, Thönnesgensmühle, Schneidersmühle and Weißmühle are located. Some of these mills have been renovated in style and are once again inhabited. From the hotel "Weißmühle" we follow the road to the hotel "Winneburg" and continue along the road to Carlfritz-Nicolay Platz in Cochem. In Cochem it is worth visiting the Reichsburg.
