The wood thistle (ilex aquifolium) has one of its largest contiguous occurrences in Rhineland-Palatinate in Farschweiler. A total of 2.5 hectares of thistle plantations can be found along the Rascheider Weg.

In 2009, a 3.4 km long nature trail on the wood thistle and on the forest, nature and its protection in general was created, with great support from the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and the state. In 2021, on the initiative and under the leadership of the Heimat-und Verkehrsverein Farschweiler e.V. in cooperation with the Tourist Information of the Ruwer Municipality and with the financial support of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, the redesign of the Wood Thistle Trail was realised.

The nature discovery trail is very popular with children and is often visited by school and kindergarten groups. At the individual stations, very different topics can be experienced, some of them interactively. For example, you can learn about wood as a source of energy, test whether you can jump as far as a hare or a lynx in a jumping pit, or count the rings on a tree trunk to find out its age. On a former charcoal kiln site, you can still find remnants of the charcoal that was processed here back then under the foliage. Forest detectives can go in search of various objects, and information boards on the wildcat and the wolf provide facts worth knowing about these inhabitants of the forest.

A new feature is the digital scavenger hunt offered along the trail. You can easily answer tricky questions if you pay attention at the stations along the way. You will find the QR code with the link to the digital scavenger hunt directly on site. Further information can be found on the homepage of the Ruwer tourist information office at

Admire the size of the thistles amidst the thistles, which can grow up to ten metres high under favourable growing conditions. "

Safety information

Especially in autumn, be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. After storms, trees can still fall over or branches can fall down. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on natural paths. You have to reckon with this kind of path impairment when you go on a hike.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the car park, follow the forest path for about 200 m to the entrance to the forest thistle trail. The nature trail is signposted throughout with a symbol in the form of a thistle leaf and is marked in one direction. Already on the first few metres we learn about different tree species and the relevance of forests for humans and animals. Along the jumping pit (it is really impressive how far a deer can jump!), we go to the station "Wood as an energy supplier". A little later we reach the area of the forest thistles and can marvel at the concentrated occurrence. Further up the path, there is information on the age of a tree and we reach the coal pile site with the opportunity to take a break. Once at the top, we reach the former Roman road and the path leads us back to our starting point at further stations.
