From the Barbarossa city of Kaiserslautern to the Veldenz town of Lauterecken, the cycle route runs for 34 km through the idyllic Lauter valley, home to a wide range of cultural and scenic attractions. Starting from Gartenschau park in Kaiserslautern, the cycle route follows the course of the river Lauter to Otterbach. There you have the opportunity to visit the Stellwerk Museum, signal box museum, located directly on the cycle route, or the motorcycle museum. We highly recommend taking a trip to the Walloon town of Otterberg, with its impressive half-timbered houses and 12th-century monastery church. The trail continues through varied scenery and past pretty villages with excellent places to stop for a rest as it wends its way towards Katzweiler, Hirschhorn and Olsbrücken en route to the North Palatine Uplands. Never far from the river Lauter, cyclists continue their off-road journey before soon reaching the town of Wolfstein. In Wolfstein, they can visit attractions including the
Kalkbergwerk sightseeing lime mine at Königsberg, or the ruins of Alt and Neu Wolfstein castles. An idyllic path directly by the river Lauter takes riders to the municipality of Heinzenhausen. From here, it is not much further to Lauterecken. Veldenz Castle and the war memorial in Lauterecken are well worth a visit. A draisine trip on the disused railway line between Altenglan and Staudernheim is a very special experience.

Author’s recommendation

On the first Sunday in August each year, part of the Lauter valley is declared a traffic-free zone. On this day, only cyclists and skaters are allowed on the road. The B270 from Kaiserslautern to Lauterecken is closed to motorised traffic and is transformed into a lively leisure trail for the whole family.

Turn-by-turn directions

Difficulty level: This cycle route in the Lauter valley is an easy, family-friendly trail with no long climbs.

Route characteristics:

Route:

Predominantly agricultural roads, cycle paths on classified roads, and short stretches of district road with only light traffic.

Surface quality:

29 km of asphalt

7 km of crushed brick/stone surfaces

The route in the cycle network: The Lauter Cycle Route provides an important north-south connection as it links Kaiserslautern and the Palatinate Forest with the river Glan and the Hunsrück-Nahe region.

A family-friendly trail. There are also plenty of places to stop en route through the region’s richly varied scenery, including restaurants and rest areas. The countless train stations along the route also mean that cyclists can board a train at any point and complete the return journey by rail.

The Lauter Cycle Route is signposted with the route logo from Westbahnhof train station in Kaiserslautern. From here, the route heads north alongside the B270. Before the street called Lothringer Dell, the route turns diagonally left onto a shared footpath and cycle trail. After the park, the route turns left into Erzhütter Straße and immediately right into Rütschhofstraße. After approx. 1.5 km, the trail turns right over a wooden bridge and along the river Lauter to the tennis courts in Otterbach. Before the tennis courts, the path turns left to head past Lampertshof, before turning right into Siegelbacher Straße. At the Stellwerk signal box museum, the cycle path continues to the left. Follow the route to Katzweiler. Shortly after entering the town, turn right across the railway tracks and then directly left into Eisenbahnstraße. After the train station, turn left into Alte Brücke. After Bonanza Ranch, turn right and continue to the K23 district road. Continue left over the bridge and then turn directly right onto an agricultural road. After the two sports fields, turn left towards Katzweiler open-air theatre. At the turn-off for the open-air theatre, bear right and follow the route as far as the L356 country road. From here, a short section of roadside cycle path takes you to Hirschorner ordenmühle. Continue to the right through the grounds of the property and then turn right again onto an agricultural road. Follow this as far as the outskirts of the municipality of Sulzbachtal. Turn right directly after entering the municipality, then turn right again at the bend in the main road before continuing straight ahead to the B270. Turn left onto the roadside cycle path and follow it to Olsbrücken. Shortly after entering the town, cross the road to the left and follow the cycle path past the playground and sports field. At the street marked Am Hahngraben, turn left over a small wooden bridge and then left again onto Bahnhofstraße. Follow the road past the train station to the K27 country road. Then turn right for the B270 and then left onto the cycle path adjacent to the road towards Kreimbach-Kaulbach. Follow the roadside cycle path into the municipality of Kreimbach-Kaulbach. Immediately after crossing the railway tracks, turn right onto a shared footpath and cycle trail that leads past the playground to the rail halt. Turn right here onto Lauterstraße and cross the tracks again. Turn left into Hauptstraße and follow it until the street turns sharply to the left. Continue straight ahead onto an agricultural road and follow it to Rutsweiler an der Lauter. The cycle path follows the K48 to Roßbach. As the path continues, it turns left to cross the K38, crosses the railway line, and immediately after that turns right again onto a farm track. You soon reach a turn-off on the right to the youth hostel, campsite and swimming pool. The Lauter Cycle Route continues straight ahead. Keep following the railway line and the river Lauter, passing Wolfstein train station on the right. The cycle trail passes through Wolfstein on a designated path and heads for Oberweiler. Turn right onto the K49 and follow the road to the left towards Oberweiler-Tiefenbach. Straight ahead, a farm track follows the river Lauter to Heinzenhausen. On the outskirts of the town, turn left onto the K41, which is shared with other traffic. At the end of the town, turn right onto the roadside cycle path to Lohnweiler. The main road is crossed via an underpass and the trail continues along Hauptstraße into the town. At the bus stop, turn right into the street marked Mühlacker. At the end of this street, a farm track leads to Lauterecken. Follow Am Lauterbühl as far as the railway tracks, cross them, and then follow Schillerstraße. At the bridge over the river Lauter, turn off onto a path running directly alongside the river and follow it past the allotments to Hauptstraße in the centre of town. Turn left onto Hauptstraße and follow it. Before the railway tracks, turn right into Bahnhofstraße. The Lauter Cycle Route ends at Lauterecken-Grumbach train station.
